Utah Beach to Cherbourg is the work of Maj. Roland G. Ruppenthal, member of the 2d Information and Historical Service, attached to the First Army. The manuscript was edited under the supervision of Lt. Gordon Harrison of the Historical Section, European Theater of Operations, and in the Historical Division, War Department Special Staff. I listened to this book (read by the author and WWII historian Stephen Ambrose) before our trip to Normandy to see the D Day sites. The book dramatically tells the true story of the how the Allies (US, Canada and Great Britain) broke through Hitler's Atlantic wall, focusing on D Day, June 6, /5(18).

The U.S. Army remembers June 6, The World War II D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. On June 6, , more than , Allied troops landed along a mile stretch of heavily-fortified. The D-Day landings of 6 June were one of the most significant moments of the Second World War, and marked the point when the combined military force of the Western allies were finally brought to bear fully against Germany.

Ambrose reveals for the first time anywhere that the intricate plan for the invasion of France in Junehad to be abandoned before the first shot was fired. It ends at midnight June 6/7. Focusing on those pivotal twenty-four hours, it moves from the level of Supreme Commander to that of a French child, from General Omar Bradley to an American paratrooper, from Field Marshal Montgomery to a German sergeant.

Ambrose’s D-Day is the finest account of one of our history’s most important days.Sadly, more people know of the battles of Game of Thrones than the events of 6th June This was an event fought by men and women largely in their early 20s.

Ordinary people. As Harry 'Bombardier H' Hartill remarked in the book We Remember D-Day, 'There were no John Waynes among us – we were butchers, carpenters, painters and rent.
